Chloë Ester’s distinctive style is informed by indie, dream pop, bubblegrunge, shoegaze, and alternative rock sounds. Based in Charlottesville, VA, her songs have been described as introspective, cynical, delicate, dark, and sarcastic. She delivers crushingly vulnerable lyrics with a clear, magnetic voice and blistering directness, often obsessing over fear, trauma, love, and its absence. She has been playing locally for over 12 years, but first formed a band in 2020, and since then she has been focusing on creating alternative indie rock sets that are as tough as they are tender. 

 

Chloë Ester’s debut EP Dying All The Time, released in October of 2020, is BANKS meets Phoebe Bridgers meets Future Islands meets electro pop alt indie rock(?). The songs thicken and then thin out again, warping and breathing as they move along. Every track introduces surprising instrumentation to the mix and feeling of each piece. Dying All The Time delivers on depth of sound and fluidity of genre. These songs are delicate and also tough; each track considers a spectrum of emotion. Chloë Ester is a storyteller singing in a tone that is always soft but never weak, unspooling lyrics that will suck you in and make you listen. The gentleness of her vocals brings a cadence to the music that hovers somewhere between innocent and jaded, and yet isn’t either of those things.
